From Autoblog: “We asked about the possibility of the turbocharged 2.5-liter engine coming to the Mazda3. We did get the typical response of not being able to comment on future product. However, they did confirm that the turbocharged engine does in fact fit in the new Mazda3, since it and the naturally aspirated engine are very similar, and the naturally aspirated engine still uses an enormous header, meaning turbo plumbing wouldn’t be an issue. Everyone we spoke with at Mazda did emphasize that they are listening closely to buyers, which is what led to the turbo engine being offered on the Mazda6 and !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , as well as the introduction of all-wheel-drive to the Mazda3. So, if you, like us, want to see the turbo engine added to the Mazda3, let the company know. They might just do it.”
Other highlights- Offered with 2.5L engine first. Power is almost the same with 186 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque, gains of 2 horsepower and 1 pound-foot. Fuel economy is rated at 27 mpg in the city, 36 on the highway, and 30 overall for front-wheel-drive models. We would expect the all-wheel-drive model to have slightly worse fuel economy simply due to extra weight and having to power two extra wheels.
The Skyactiv-X engine will become available later in 2019. It will be rolled out in Europe first, with America coming after. When it does come here, it will be offered in states with stricter emissions regulations before coming to other states
Now as for drivetrains, the company is still deciding which trims and which combinations of engines will be offered. Naturally, a manual has been announced, and with the 2.5-liter engine being the standard engine, that will be a combination for sure. The manual does indeed couple with the all-wheel-drive system, so that’s a possibility, too . And manual and automatic transmissions work with the Skyactiv-X engine. So all combinations are possible , but Mazda is determining exactly which combinations will be offered.

I’m not saying I would buy a car new but this is probably the first car that really tempts me to do so.

The overall package is excellent for the class. Too bad they screwed up the visibility in the hatch. I think with the AWD+2.5+Manual combo enthusiasts who always want affordable sporty cars should support Mazda by buying this car. Either suck it up and buy the hatch, or there’s always the sedan. But we all know enthusiasts are an extremely picky bunch. We’ll see.
For me personally, more than the Mazda3 I am excited about the possibilities with the Mazda 6. if they put the AWD system in the Mazda 6 turbo I’d lease one new. I really liked it when I test drove one, along with the new Accord.

AWD, manual, 2.5 Mazda 3 you say? I really need to be in new vehicle in time for mud season though....

Your other alternative is a Crosstrek. Choose wisely.

AWD, Manual, 2.5.
Turbo.
And it’s a Mazda so it’ll be fun to drive too.

This car could be the Japanese A3 of our dreams

The new Mazda interiors at least are definitely up to Audi level in fit finish material quality and design. And they are better styled outside than lower end Audis.

If the crosstrek was fun in an everyday commute I think Subaru would completely destroy Mazda. To me it’s hard to argue with the 3’s greater power, better interior, likely comparable MPG and comparable AWD (for typical use). Hopefully the general public reward Mazda for their efforts and make Subaru step up their game.

My Prediction: Watch as this, the new Rav4 and the new Honda Passport steal sales from the Impreza, Forester and Outback respectively. The comparison tests will come soon enough and Subarus won’t come on top. And n obody even buys, or even knows the Legacy exists, they might has well discontinue it.
In pursuit of the Ascent they have just gotten lazy and been resting on laurels for the rest of the lineup, not to mention none of these new competitors have terrible CVTs. The Ascent is in a safe place, people will buy the WRX/STi no matter what but Subaru better watch out. I know Subaru buyers are loyal but I expect enough swicthing for Subaru to sit up and take notice.

Subaru will always have it’s pure loyalists but they better be careful to not lose the decerning shopper.

I love this new car, and I hope it does well.

A 6 turbo with AWD would be the tits. Didn't the new one just come out though?

As much as I like the idea of a AWD, manual, turbo 2.5 mazda 3 hatch... I am anticipating it to be like the Toyota Pre vi a. The Previa had AWD, manual, and super charger options but you could not get more than one of the se options on any trim level . It is beast not to get your hopes up. It will only lead to disappointment .

I assume you’re the minority here who doesn’t mind the THICc hatch?

Turbo was t his year, yes. They would be smart to offer AWD 2019 or 2020 becuase Toyota folks said they are considering an AWD Camry. The Altima already offers one this year but not on the turbo motor.

Correct. I might not have made the pillar so big, but I’m not losing my mind over it like most of the commentariat.

More overly complicated stuff to cause problems. Look at Honda .... can't even do a DI turbo without fuel dilution. All junk for a gas engine. Might as well go electric. Less complicated and no potential fumes in the cabin !

Good to know there are others out there who share this viewpoint. I am certainly going to be paying a lot of attention to what Mazda will finally offer with this car.

The crosstrek is not a choice, it is defeat. Losing the manual and going for a Hyundai Kona Li mited is a choice.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Glad to know you’re not one of them Crosstrek apologists. It’s not even fun in a “Slow car fast” sort of way.
I have read and watched good reviews on the Kona 1.6T AWD. Only 2 shortcomings seem to be hard plastics everywhere and lack of back seat space for decent sized adults, kids will be fine.

Yeah, the driveline and chassis are both surprisingly fun.

I also don’t mind it that much, but the sedan’s profile remind me of the old Acura TSX (in a good way). Would be a tough call for me. (Will be? I could definitely see owning one of these in a few years.)

Good design analysis here. Check out the light playing on the rear of the hatch from 6:50 on.

Yup. Watched that. Antuan is a good reviewer.
